Hovde says he would ‘step away’ from business holdings if elected
U.S. Senate candidate Eric Hovde in a WisPolitics-WisconsinEye interview said he would “totally recuse myself” from the California bank he owns and step away from his business holdings if he defeats U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin, D-Madison, in November.
“I have a real estate development company, I own properties throughout our state, developing a big apartment project in Racine right now, in Janesville, you know, obviously properties throughout Dane County, so, you know, if I go into the Senate, I would step away from my business holdings,” Hovde said.
Earlier this week, Hovde reported his net worth at between $195.5 million and $564.4 million, which would make him one of the wealthiest members of Congress if elected. His actual net worth could be significantly higher, considering he listed the value of his holding in Sunwest Bank Inc. at more than $50 million, the highest disclosure required under federal rules.
Hovde argued Baldwin is “bought off by special interests.”
“Tammy Baldwin takes special interest money from Wall Street, from big pharma, from big tech, she’s controlled by all the special interest money,” Hovde said. “I made my commitment, I’m not going to take any of that special interest money. I’m going to focus on the people of Wisconsin and getting our country back on a better track.”
He also pushed back on criticism from Dems for his California ties, noting he’s never been a resident of California, where he owns a $7 million home.
“I’m a fourth-generation Wisconsinite, born here, raised here, live here. They’ve known that, they’ve just been lying about it,” Hovde said. “I went to the University of Wisconsin, I’m a proud Badger. She didn’t go to the University of Wisconsin; she has spent a lot more time out of the state of Wisconsin than I ever have.”
