Evers attributes roll call gaffe to nerves, excitement

CHICAGO – Dem Gov. Tony Evers shrugged off his convention roll call gaffe as “a mistake” and “one of those moments you obviously don’t want to happen.’’

“Life goes on,’’ he told reporters at today’s Wisconsin delegation breakfast. “It is what it is.’’

One reporter asked if it was nerves or excitement. “Yeah, it was all,’’ the guv said.

Another reporter offered that maybe he was too jazzed, a favorite Evers saying. “I was too jazzed. That’s right,” he answered.

During last night’s symbolic roll call of the states, Evers told the arena he was “jazzed as hell to announce that Wisconsin casts one present and 94 votes for …” before trailing off. At one point, he said, “Oh, where are we?” and later apologized to DNC Secretary Jason Rae, a Wisconsin native, as he sought to get back on track, promising, “I’ll get there, Jason, I’ll get there.”

Evers today was asked about the reaction on social media.

“That’s kind of bizarre, to think that is a defining moment of anything,’’ he answered. “One thing I know for sure is that you don’t control social media, and so I’m not worried about social media.’’

Later he talked about Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, the running mate of presidential nominee Kamala Harris. He called him “a consummate Midwestern guy,’’ before wryly observing: “I betcha he’ll stumble sometime along the way. … I can give him advice.”

In other comments, Evers said the split screen moment between the convention at the United Center and the packed Harris-Walz rally at Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee was powerful.

“That tells me she’s going to win, big time,’’ he said. “It’s a powerful duo, and Wisconsin seems to be in a really good place. … This is a great combination. We’re going to win. We’re going to win in Wisconsin.’’

Asked if he was suggesting Dems were on the verge of a breakout in Wisconsin, Evers said the margin will be bigger than Joe Biden’s victory four years ago. Four of the past six presidential elections in Wisconsin have been decided by less than 23,000 votes each.

‘’We’re a purple state. I mean, no question about that. There will be no 7% (margin), but it won’t be 20,000 votes.’’
