Bates campaign: From the ballot to the convention, many firsts for AD 37 candidate LaToya Bates

LaToya Bates is a social entrepreneur, educator and faith leader, running for the Wisconsin State Assembly in District 37. This new district includes northern Dodge, southern Fond du Lac and parts of Columbia counties. Bates and her two daughters are spending the week in Chicago as Bates is part of the Harris delegation, representing Wisconsin’s 6th Congressional District. This is Bates’ first time attending the Democratic National Convention (DNC), her first time as a DNC delegate and her first time running for political office. Growing up in the Milwaukee area, the Wisconsin native and former K-12 educator has taken an active role in local politics and says running for office was something she had been preparing to do for many years. Relocating to Dodge County, she found a growing presence of Democrats and an opportunity to lead.

Bates is the Founding Director of Wounded Wings Association for the Betterment of Women and Girls, a charitable organization helping survivors of domestic and sexual abuse. The organization recently started the Women’s Entrepreneur Network to help women and youth start or scale a sustainable small business. Bates, a resident of Mayville, has listed healthcare, education and the economy as her top priorities for the State Assembly when elected. Bates was a healthcare worker in undergrad spending three years at the Wisconsin Department of Correction after college.

Last Tuesday’s primary determined Bates will face incumbent Mark Born in November. Thursday, Bates was interviewed by Ted Perry of Fox 6 Milwaukee for his Conventional Wisdom Podcast, covering the DNC. She spent Saturday in Beaver Dam, visiting the Dodge County Fair before canvassing. Bates is gaining support in the district, with support all over her state.

Bates returns to Wisconsin this Friday to prepare for the Whitefish Bay Farmers Market and WFB Night Market this Saturday. The markets are run by Lauryn Wynter Company, owned by Bates and her daughters. Bates will then spend Saturday canvassing in Waupun as part of a Wis Dem’s weekend of action. A fitting end to a historic week for Bates and our nation.
