Wisconsin Elections Commission: Rule changes in effect for nomination paper period for some independent candidates seeking oval office

MADISON, WI. – July 1 marks the start of the nomination paper circulation period for some independent presidential and vice-presidential candidates.

Presidential and vice-presidential candidates affiliated with parties already on the ballot do not need to circulate nomination papers. Independent candidates for president and vice president have until August 6 to submit their nomination papers.

July 1 is also the effective date of several administrative rules changes that govern the procedures for challenging candidate nomination papers and declarations of candidacy. Changes to the administrative rules were adopted by the Wisconsin Elections Commission (WEC) following several public meetings. Details on these rules for candidates, including the full text of the new rule language, can be found in attachments to this news release.

The new rules, unless suspended, will govern any challenges brought against nomination papers filed in August. WEC commissioners indicated that a lack of familiarity with the rules will not constitute a defense to any challenges.

Candidates with questions can contact WEC at  elections@wi.gov or call 608-266-8005.
