Wisconsin delegate, 19, says young people will show up for Harris in November

Young people are excited by Kamala Harris’ presidential bid and will show up to vote this November, Ana Wilson, a 19-year-old first-time delegate from Wauwatosa, tells WisPolitics.

Wilson said she was shocked when President Joe Biden ended his campaign and that the decision was a “selfless act.”

But with Harris leading the ticket, she said she’s excited for November and other young people are, as well.

“I definitely do see a shift in excitement,” she told WisPolitics following the Wisconsin delegation’s first breakfast program of the convention. “I’m very excited to see where this goes.”

She said it’s important to get young people to register to vote, and she predicted the sometimes unreliable youth vote “will be up there a lot for this next election.”

Gun control, human rights, voting rights and reproductive rights are big issues for her and her friends, said Wilson, who will be attending college next semester at Mount Mary University.

“Reproductive rights is a big one right now,” she said, expressing concern that former President Trump would seek a nationwide abortion if elected again.

Wilson said she’s not comfortable with other making decisions about her body and that Harris believes “us women should be choosing for ourselves.”

Wilson’s looking forward to the evening programs at the United Center.

“I think this will be great. Very excited,” she said.”I think the energy will be electric and off the roof.”

Wilson said she’s hoping to meet new people and learn a lot during the convention.

“I’m just hoping … it’s a learning experience,” she said. “It’s a brand-new thing for me, so I’m just very excited to be here.”
