Wied declares victory in 8th CD GOP primary

Trump-endorsed Tony Wied declared victory tonight in 8th CD GOP primary and will face Dem Kristin Lyerly in November.

The political newcomer from Green Bay had 39.45% of the vote compared to 35.62% for former state Sen. Roger Roth of Neenah and 24.55% for State Sen. André Jacque of De Pere.

In a release, Wied said he is “overwhelmed by the support shown to our campaign by the people of Wisconsin’s 8th Congressional District.”

“I want to thank the voters for entrusting me with this honor,” Wied said. “I won’t let them down. I look forward to delivering the change we need in Washington to lower everyday costs, secure the southern border and reign in reckless government spending. Onward to November!”

Roth conceded in a post on X.

“Tonight’s outcome wasn’t what we hoped for, but I am proud of the campaign we ran in #WI08,” Roth said in a post on X. “My family and I are so grateful for all those who supported us and stood up for conservative principles. I look forward to helping @TonyWied and all WI Republicans win this Fall.”

Wied if he wins in November will serve the remainder of Rep. Mike Gallagher’s term and a full term starting January 2025. Gallagher resigned his seat earlier this year.

Wied, who previously owned a chain of gas stations in northeastern Wisconsin, was endorsed by former President Donald Trump and played that up in his advertising. In all, he had $873,451 in reservations ahead of the primary, according to AdImpact.

Roth, meanwhile, put $570,429 up on the air with another $1.9 million in support from two groups backing him. Roth’s ads played up his support of Trump, even though the former president urged him to drop out.

Jacque, who significantly trailed his GOP rivals in fundraising, put up just $178,700 in ad spending. He sought to break through with an ad that portrayed him as a boxer with a “big right hook” for conservative causes.
