Vos hopes viewers see ‘real side’ of Trump in tonight’s speech
Assembly Speaker Robin Vos told reporters today he expects Donald Trump’s speech tonight to have a more unifying tone and said he hopes people will see the “real side” of the former president.
The Rochester Republican has had a fraught relationship with the former president since rejecting calls by Trump and his supporters to decertify Wisconsin’s 2020 election results.
“People, especially some in the liberal media, have tried to portray him as an angry person. I think we’re going to hopefully see tonight that he is compassionate, he loves his family, he loves his country, he’s brave, and he has a better vision for the country,” Vos said. “So my hope is they see the real side of Donald Trump, which I have seen at times, where it is kind, caring and actually, you know, really interested in what people think and listening to them.”
Trump has repeatedly criticized the speaker, calling him a “RINO,” or “Republican in name only.”
Earlier this month, Trump praised former Supreme Court Justice Michael Gableman, who has helped lead the effort to recall Vos, and said he “must be defeated.”
Vos said he hasn’t spoken to Trump recently, adding he is open to it and they had tried to get together. But he said after the attempted assassination against Trump, security has been tighter and Trump’s schedule has gotten “more crazy.”
Vos also said he thinks Trump has a good shot at winning Wisconsin, though he noted the results will likely be close.
“I have been in Wisconsin long enough to not be overconfident, right? Every election is decided by, you know, a razor-thin margin,” Vos said. “If Joe Biden is the candidate, because of his obvious mental foibles, I think we stand a really good chance to win.”
He argued even if Democrats decide to field a candidate other than Biden, their policies won’t change.
“They still believe in an open border— that’s bad for our country, bad for workers,” Vos said. “They don’t want to do anything about energy independence, they’re going to keep continuing to say we should focus on alternative fuels, which sometimes are okay, but clearly increase the cost for most Wisconsinites. The cost of food, housing, all of their policies won’t change. In fact, they might get worse.”
