Thurston campaign: Response to DDA Boese’s August 12, 2024 press release
This morning, on the eve of the election, Boese’s press release betrays her. It is factual – Boese botched a case relating to four alleged offenders. The facts of this case are revealing.
On or around February 28, 2021, the City of Waukesha Police Department referred charges related to four drug offenders to the Waukesha District Attorney’s office. Boese sat on this referral for years. After announcing her candidacy last August, and returning from an extended vacation, Boese attempted to clean up the mess. First, she issued charges against 1 of the 4 offenders in November of 2023. That case was later dismissed and read-in. Boese delayed charging the other 3 offenders with misdemeanors until after February 28, 2024, beyond Wisconsin’s statute of limitations. The misdemeanor cases were immediately dismissed in court, as required by law.
Boese distracts from this narrative (about her laziness or incompetence or both) by arguing that the underlying armed robbery and kidnapping started first in Jefferson County. But Boese didn’t get around to considering these referrals until the fall of 2023, more than 2.5 years later. She never carefully considered whether creative or aggressive prosecutorial methods were available. She never considered the dangerousness of this situation to the victim. She never considered how waiting years to charge this case might look to our hard working law enforcement partners or how this might negatively impact our community.
Today, she is still failing to take ownership of her inaction. She simply hasn’t been doing her own work. The numbers speak for themselves – 103 cases of drug dealers, some five years old, still remain “under her review.”
I am unwilling to respond to her attempts to slander my character. A rehashing of the past three months and the inflammatory rhetoric she has engaged in is unproductive. The fact is, on the eve of this election, Boese is still trying to divide and attack. Just as our entire law enforcement community does, the voters of Waukesha County know which candidate is willing and interested in actually doing the hard work.
I, Mike Thurston, humbly ask for your vote. It has been my honor to serve the citizens of Waukesha County. I look forward to implementing processes that eliminate these case backlogs that leave criminals free to prey on our community. Thank you for your support and trust.
