The Best Blood Orange Margarita

It is officially Summer and my favorite time of the year!  I  am not really a liquor drinker and usually favor a good glass of wine. But, give me a good margarita and I am forever your girl! It is, hands-down, my favorite cocktail, and I love making them (and drinking them) during the warm summer months. I like to experiment with different flavors, and I made the Best Blood Orange Margarita this past weekend, so I have to share it with you. I consider myself a margarita connoisseur and have a few tips to make the best ones:

FRESH CITRUS ALWAYS

I prefer my margaritas light and fresh, and not too sweet and this is key. Fresh juice makes all the difference. Squeezing citrus for a crowd can be quite the pain in the butt, so I use this awesome lemon squeezer (works for both lemons & limes) and this citrus juicer to help me for the larger fruits, like oranges and grapefruit.

LIGHT ON THE SWEETENER

I hate those sickeningly sweet margs you get at restaurants, full of fake lime juice and sugar. When I make my classic margaritas  I use hardly any agave at all, but rather, a splash of fresh orange juice to sweeten them. Only after adding the juice do I add a tiny bit of agave to taste.

CRUSHED ICE FOR THE WIN

I always use crushed ice. It cools the cocktail more evenly, and I just prefer it in general.

FRESH ZEST FOR PRETTINESS

I always add a bit of fresh zest to mine, no matter what kind of margarita I am making.  It adds the prettiest touch, especially to a classic margarita, and gives your cocktails that little extra something special.

I will be making these all summer long.  I hope you give them a try and enjoy them as much as I do.

THE BEST BLOOD ORANGE MARGARITA

Ingredients:

(serves 8)

2 cups blood orange juice, freshly squeezed (about 8 oranges)

1/2 cup lime juice, freshly squeezed (about 2 limes)

1/2 cup orange-flavored liqueur

1 3/4 cups silver tequila

2 to 3 tablespoons agave nectar, to taste

Seltzer

Crushed ice

8 blood orange slices for decoration

salt for the rim (optional)

How to:

Mix blood orange, lime, liqueur, tequila, and agave nectar together.

Strain into a large pitcher.

Refrigerate until chilled, at least 30 minutes.

Moisten the outer rim of 8 glasses with orange or lime, and dip the rims into salt to lightly coat.

Add ice to the pitcher and stir well.

Pour into glasses. I just got these, and I love them.

Top with seltzer.

Garnish with blood orange slices, and serve over crushed ice.

Have a great weekend, girlies!
