Shankland campaign: League of Conservation Voters endorses Shankland for Congress

The endorsement builds on Shankland’s experience as a leader on environmental issues in the State Legislature, in contrast to MAGA extremist Derrick Van Orden

STEVENS POINT, WI — The League of Conservation Voters (LCV), a leading national advocate for environmental conservation, has endorsed State Rep. Katrina Shankland for Congress in the state’s 3rd Congressional District.

LCV’s endorsement builds on Shankland’s momentum to unseat MAGA extremist Derrick Van Orden. In an ad released across TV and streaming platforms, “Jen’s Story,” Shankland highlighted the impact of her $10 million program launched with Governor Evers to remediate and replace contaminated private wells. Since her first election to the Wisconsin State Assembly in 2013, Shankland has served as an outspoken environmental champion. In addition to her program focused on clean water, her record includes:

  • Passing a bipartisan flood resiliency pilot program into law and introducing bills to invest in clean energy, double energy efficiency incentives through Focus on Energy, help farmers with carbon sequestration, and support research on climate and agriculture in Wisconsin.
  • As a hunter who serves as the Co-Chair of the Wisconsin Legislative Sportsmen’s Caucus, introducing legislation to protect our deer herd from Chronic Wasting Disease and working with the Wisconsin Wildlife Federation to advance it.
  • Serving as the only legislator on Governor Evers’ Green Ribbon Commission, a board set up to guide the state’s first-ever Environmental Innovation Fund in Wisconsin.
  • Advocating for the Mississippi Restoration & Resilience Initiative, advanced by Senator Tammy Baldwin and neighboring Minnesota Congresswoman Betty McCollum, to help protect one of the district’s greatest assets from water quality issues and invasive species.
  • For her extensive work on protecting our natural resources in Wisconsin as the ranking member of the Assembly Environment Committee, being awarded the Conservation Champion and a 100% lifetime score by Wisconsin Conservation Voters, the Friend of Conservation by Wisconsin Land + Water, RENEW Wisconsin Energy Fund’s Legislative Leadership Award, and the Legislator of the Year by the Wisconsin Wildlife Federation.

“In the Legislature, I’m proud to have a 100% lifetime score with Wisconsin Conservation Voters for protecting our natural resources and democracy,” Shankland said. “I’ll provide that same strong leadership in Congress. I’ll fight for clean air and water, a healthy climate, access to public lands, and new investments in clean energy. I’ll build on the progress of the Inflation Reduction Act to ensure more working families and seniors can leverage these incentives while lowering the cost of energy bills.”

“Katrina has spent her entire career working for clean energy and healthier communities. The League of Conservation Voters Action Fund is thrilled to endorse Shankland for election in WI-03, where she will fight to clean up our water from PFAS, nitrates, and other contaminants and take bold climate action,” the organization posted

This is the first and only environmental organization to endorse in the WI-03 primary so far. Shankland has now amassed endorsements from neighboring Congressmembers Mark Pocan, Gwen Moore, Eric Sorensen, and Betty McCollum; former Congressman Dave Obey; the Wisconsin State AFL-CIO; 16 unions; more than four dozen state and local elected officials; and three other national groups, End Citizens United, Social Security Works, and United Rural Democrats. Head-to-head polling shows Shankland is the only Democratic candidate who beats Van Orden in the general election this November, 48-46%.
