Sen. Felzkowski: Statement on death of Corey Proulx
CONTACT: Sen. Mary Felzkowski, 608-266-2509
Madison, WI – On Tuesday afternoon, Corey Proulx, a youth counselor at the Lincoln Hills Juvenile Facility, died due to injuries he sustained during an attack on him and a fellow colleague by an incarcerated individual at the school:
“My heart aches for Corey Proulx’s family, friends, and colleagues as they face this devastating loss. The pain of losing someone you love is like no other. Everything I have heard about Corey indicates he was a kind, thoughtful man who loved his family, and was dedicated to his job and the youth at Lincoln Hills. My own brother was a youth counselor there until his passing, so I understand first-hand how difficult and rewarding that kind of work is- and that it takes a truly special kind of person to devote themselves to that calling.
The grief I feel is intermingled with my sense of duty as a legislator to advocate and fight for my constituents. I am finding it difficult to keep my anger at bay as I think about why this occurred, and how it was allowed to occur. For far too long, I have been sounding the alarm that it was always a matter of when, and not if, a tragedy of this magnitude would occur at Lincoln Hills. As we give Corey’s family time to process this life-altering heartbreak, I want to assure his colleagues, my community, and all those who knew him, that the Legislature will leave no stone unturned as we work towards accountability and justice.”
