Sen. Ballweg: Receives American Cancer Society State Senator of the Year Award
Madison…The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network in Wisconsin recognized Senator Joan Ballweg with their State Senator of the Year Award in Windsor on Thursday, October 17, 2024 for championing efforts to extend Medicaid assistance for postpartum women.
“I thank the American Cancer Society for this recognition and their partnership to extend access to healthcare for moms in their first year postpartum,” said Ballweg.
Senator Ballweg authored 2023 Senate Bill 110 to extend access to Medicaid coverage for eligible women from 60 days to one-year post birth. This bipartisan bill is widely supported by a coalition of 45 groups across Wisconsin and 73 legislative co-sponsors.
“Unfortunately, maternal mortality and morbidity continue to be major concerns and we see large disparities in health outcomes for specific groups like rural residents and women of color. We must do everything we can to provide continuity of care for new moms, which will also lead to better health outcomes for the baby. I am committed to leading these efforts to support all our new moms, especially the most vulnerable in our communities,” stated Ballweg.
