Rep. Stubbs: Applauds launch of missing child alert

MADISON, WI –Yesterday, the Wisconsin Department of Justice announced the official implementation of the new Missing Child Alert System, which was created by 2023 Wisconsin Act 272, authored by Representative Shelia Stubbs, Representative John Spiros, Senator LaTonya Johnson, and Senator Jesse James. Representative Shelia Stubbs (D-Madison) released the following statement:

I am so proud that the Prince Act, which I introduced alongside Senator LaTonya Johnson, Senator Jesse James, and Representative John Spiros, has now been officially implemented as the Missing Child Alert. It is our duty as legislators to protect the well-being of all Wisconsinites, especially our children. I would like to thank my colleagues for their hard work and support. I would also like to thank Governor Evers for signing this critical piece of legislation into law, and Attorney General Kaul for putting the alert system into place.

After the tragic missing person’s cases of 5-year-old Prince McCree in Milwaukee and 10-year-old Lily Peters in Chippewa Falls, neither of which was covered by an Amber Alert, we saw the clear need for legislation that would improve our practices in notifying the public about missing and endangered children. When a child in our community goes missing, it is imperative that they are located as quickly as possible. With the adoption of the Missing Child Alert, I am hopeful that we will prevent future tragedies and bring more kids home to their families.

I am committed to introducing and advocating for legislation that strengthens supports for the families of missing people, and I intend to continue developing bills that empower law enforcement, community organizations, and families to locate and safely recover their loved ones.
