Obama and Walz question Trump’s mental competence at Madison rally
Barack Obama and Tim Walz at a rally in Madison today questioned Donald Trump’s mental competence.
Obama pointed to Trump’s two-hour long campaign speeches, saying “you’d be worried if your grandpa was acting like this.”
The former president said that Kamala Harris, meanwhile, is “ready to do the job.”
Walz said Trump does not have the stamina to be president, and that he recently has been “rambling more than the normal rambling.”
“I don’t care if he is exhausted,” Walz said. “He’s not as exhausted as the people are of him.”
Walz knocked Trump’s recent trip to McDonald’s, and said it was “cruel using people’s livelihood as a political prop.”
The pair spoke at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum at Alliant Energy Center on the first day of early voting amid a push by both parties to get voters to cast their ballots ahead of the Nov. 5 election.
Obama said freedom for Trump means “letting powerful people do whatever the hell they want, including busting unions.”
In response, the many members in attendance of the Laborers’ International Union of North America — wearing orange “Laborers Rising with Kamala & Tim” shirts — booed loudly. The union endorsed Harris in late July.
Ahead of the event, state GOP Chair Brian Schimming said in a statement that Harris and Walz were turning to Obama to “rescue their flailing campaign” while knocking the former president for moves such as blocking the Keystone pipeline.
“Is it any wonder that voters increasingly distrust the Democratic Party to lower costs and keep them safe?” Schimming said.
Obama and Walz were joined at today’s rally by state Dem Party Chair Ben Wikler, interim Dane County Executive Jamie Kuhn, Gov. Tony Evers, U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin, actor Bradley Whitford, U.S. Rep. Mark Pocan, a freshman student at Madison College and Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway.
Walz slammed Trump’s running mate JD Vance for comments he made on Monday saying Trump “speaks from the heart” when describing his political rivals as “the enemy from within.”
“A cold, grinchy, three-sizes-too-small heart,” Walz said.
Walz called Elon Musk, who has been campaigning with Trump and offering $1 million a day to swing state voters who signed a petition supporting the First and Second Amendments, Trump’s running mate — rather than Vance. He said Musk is “on that stage jumping around, skipping like a dipshit.”
It was Walz’s sixth visit to the state since becoming Harris’ running mate in August. It was Obama’s first trip to Wisconsin since Harris’ nomination and seventh since 2007. Walz will visit Racine later tonight.
