Mueller: Historic King Drive bid hosts Bronzeville Week events to celebrate local businesses and culture

From August 3 – August 10, neighbors, visitors and business owners will celebrate Bronzeville Week with community events

MILWAUKEE – As part of Bronzeville Week, the City of Milwaukee’s annual celebration of African American culture, history, art, commerce, and entertainment, the Historic King Drive Business Improvement District (BID) will present three events showcasing the unique culture and commerce of Bronzeville: The Bronzeville Business Breakfast, Bronzeville Trolley Rides and Bronzeville Art Walk.

Beginning Saturday, August 3 and running through Saturday, August 10, the Bronzeville Week celebration will include additional events and opportunities to patronize businesses throughout the neighborhood. 

“In all we do, the Historic King Drive BID strives to uplift and preserve the authentic essence of the historic areas encompassed in our district as we progress towards a more inclusive, prosperous future,” said Ray Hill, executive director the Historic King Drive BID. “We’re proud to participate in Bronzeville Week and celebrate the people, businesses and history that make this area unique. We encourage Milwaukeeans to join us for our events, meet neighbors and experience the heartbeat of this thriving community.”

The events presented by the BID are as follows:

August 7:

Bronzeville Business Breakfast, 8:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.

ThriveOn King, 2153 N. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive

Start your morning on the right foot with the Bronzeville Business Breakfast! Join us and your fellow business neighbors to hear important updates and learn about valuable resources to help your business. Engage in a special conversation on envisioning business differently with industry leaders Dana Guthrie, managing director at Gateway Capital Partners and Jamie Elder, co-founder of i2j Group, moderated by Lexi Brunson of CopyWrite. This event is a prime opportunity to network, gain insights, and be inspired by innovative business strategies.

August 8:

Bronzeville Trolley Rides, 2:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.

America’s Black Holocaust Museum, 401 W North Avenue

Join us on August 8 for an immersive exploration of King Drive and Bronzeville, spanning past, present, and future. Narrated by Ray Hill of the Historic King Drive BID and Kitonga Alexander of Bronzeville Histories, this trolley tour offers a unique perspective on the rich heritage and vibrant evolution of the area. The tour docks at the American Black Holocaust Museum at 2:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m., providing a perfect opportunity to delve deeper into our shared history. This event is sponsored by Versiti. 

August 3-10:

Bronzeville Art Walk, 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.

Salute Society Studio, 2372 N. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive

From August 3-10, immerse yourself in the artistic talents showcased throughout various businesses on King Drive during Bronzeville Week. Wander through the district, appreciating the diverse art pieces displayed, and cast your votes for your favorites. The week culminates in a grand capstone gallery celebration at Salute Society on August 10, where live performances, scholarship announcements, and a collective exhibition of all the artwork will take place.
