Hesselbein says Dems ‘have the wind at our back’ heading into November
CHICAGO – Senate Minority Leader Diane Hesselbein says the wind is at Democrats’ back, helping Senate Dems make progress in flipping the chamber.
Boosting the effort is the enthusiasm generated by the presidential candidacy of Kamala Harris and running mate Tim Walz. Hesselbein said Tuesday that’s being felt across the state and in districts like the 8th SD, where Jodi Habush Sinykin, who is trying to unseat incumbent state Sen. Duey Stroebel, R-Saukville, in what analysts say could be the most expensive state Senate race in Wisconsin history with millions being spent on both sides by candidates and groups.
“It’s been amazing to watch,” Hesselbein said in a WisPolitics-WisconsinEye video from the DNC. “Habush Sinykin is a fantastic campaigner. She’s a fantastic person, and I think her message is resonating with all the voters. I think it’s going to be close, but I think at the end, she’s going to be pulling it out, and it is probably going to be the most expensive seat because of the Milwaukee media market.”
The Middleton Dem conceded the switchover from Joe Biden to Harris is resetting the political landscape.
“Well, let’s be clear, I think Joe Biden is a fantastic president. He has done and he is doing a wonderful job, but I think there’s more energy now,” she said. “I can’t exactly explain why and how it’s happening, but I’m seeing among all sorts of voters, and especially younger voters, like my daughters, their classmates, everything. They’re really excited about it. So it’s going to be great.”
She said the Aug. 13 vote defeating two referendums aiming to rein in a governor’s ability to spend federal emergency dollars was a harbinger.
“I am super excited that people voted no on those referendums, and I think that people are going to show up again in November. I think we have the wind at our back. …and I think we’re just got to keep moving forward all the way to November.”
