Shankland campaign: Association of Flight Attendants–CWA becomes 19th union to endorse Democrat Katrina Shankland for Congress
STEVENS POINT, WI – The Association of Flight Attendants, a national union representing 55,000 flight attendants from 20 airlines and affiliated with the Communication Workers of America, has endorsed experienced Democratic State Rep. Katrina Shankland for Congress in Wisconsin’s 3rd Congressional District.
The organization joins the Wisconsin State AFL-CIO and 17 other labor endorsers in a historic coalition backing Shankland.
“Katrina Shankland has lived and breathed union values her entire life, and Flight Attendants are thrilled to endorse her for Congress,” said Sara Nelson, AFA-CWA President. “Katrina grew up in a union household where her public school teacher parents taught her the power we can build through solidarity. In the Wisconsin Legislature, she stood with workers again and again, walking picket lines with auto workers and Teamsters and supporting the organizing campaigns of nurses and baristas. She introduced the Wisconsin Workers First legislative package to center workers’ issues like restoring collective bargaining rights and repealing right to work in the State Capitol, and she’ll be a champion for Flight Attendants and all working people in Congress.”
“I’m honored to have the Association of Flight Attendants on our team,” Shankland said. “The union has shown what democracy looks like on the job and at the ballot box under President Nelson’s leadership, with powerful member-led campaigns for the benefits, organizing rights, and safety protections all workers deserve. Together, we can kick out anti-worker extremist Derrick Van Orden and build the power of workers and unions nationwide.”
In her race to defeat MAGA extremist Derrick Van Orden, Shankland has now amassed endorsements from scores of leaders and organizations embracing her message of working with anyone to get things done for Wisconsin. Endorsements include:
- The Wisconsin State AFL-CIO as well as AFA-CWA and 17 other unions
- Leading environmental groups, the League of Conservation Voters and Clean Wisconsin
- National organizations, End Citizens United, MoveOn, Social Security Works, United Rural Democrats, and the Progressive Change Campaign Committee
- Neighboring Congresspeople Mark Pocan (WI-02), Gwen Moore (WI-04), Eric Sorensen (IL-17), and Betty McCollum (MN-04), and former Congressman Dave Obey (WI-07)
- More than four dozen state and local elected officials, including a sweep of all current and former state legislators from the district who have endorsed in the race
Head-to-head polling shows Shankland is the only Democratic candidate who beats Van Orden in the general election this November, 48-46%.
