Waukesha County District Attorney candidate Lesli Boese released the following statement on Mike Thurston’s dishonest radio ad:
As a career prosecutor, I have handled every type of crime on the books – drug crimes, sexual assaults, homicides, and everything in between. I believe that all crimes are important, and all victims – not just those of a certain category – deserve justice. I would never downplay the severity of the types of crimes my opponent prosecutes. I must, however, call to light the deceitful way in which his ads portray me.
Last week, my opponent purchased $40 thousand dollars’ worth of radio ads, many of them negative and flat out untrue. One such ad uses audio clips of a candidate forum hosted by the Waukesha County Republican Party – the same candidate forum where my opponent suggested he would bring in Democrats to train our office on election integrity.
During the ad, my opponent spliced clips out of order to make it sound like I supported electronic home monitoring for drug dealers. Please feel free to listen to my actual statement for yourself (June 2024 District Attorney Debate, 47:15-49:25). As you can hear, I was in fact criticizing the concept of electronic home monitoring for drug dealers, pointing out the practice does not result in any accountability.
I am committed to running a race I can be proud of. I believe that includes fair criticism of my opponent’s record of political donations to John Chisholm and other Democrats, as well as the frequency with which he dismisses and amends serious felony cases. But I will never cross the line into flat out deceit. I’m disappointed my opponent couldn’t see that line.
This is just the latest in the long list of lies being told by Mike Thurston. Thurston has previously told lies about having the endorsement of every law enforcement agency in Waukesha County, lies about how many times he donated to DA John Chisholm’s campaign, and he even fabricated a list of Deputy DA Boese’s jury trials using inaccurate and incomplete data. Mike Thurston will do anything he can to distract from his disastrous record of supporting soft-on-crime Democrat politicians, inviting Democrats to teach election integrity to prosecutors, and his record of declining to prosecute over 20% of cases referred to him. If Thurston can’t be honest with the people of Waukesha County, then he has no business representing us as our District Attorney.
