Animal Crossing Fans Debate “Urban Legend” Some People Have Actually Seen

Animal Crossing: New Horizons players are confused about a fish so rare that some consider it an urban legend. For a game that revolves around collecting, connecting, and customization, ACNH leaves so much to chance: which villagers move in, which fruit is native, and, perhaps most mysteriously, which fish you catch.
A player by the name of Bluesnow2222 on Reddit recently vented their frustrations at failing to catch a stringfish, claiming the species was so rare they believed it was “an urban legend.” “In the last 2 days I’ve gone through 150 bait in the upper river levels at the correct time in the evening to no success and way too many black bass.”
Stringfish “Urban Legend” Stirs ACNH Debate
Is It Real, Or Legend?
Tens of players chimed in to share their own experiences with the elusive stringfish, some of them claiming that it’s not all that hard to catch one – you just need a little luck. “I got beginners luck on a mystery island,” said lunar-soup. “Had no idea what I was doing, no bait, simple fishing rod. Didn’t know it was that rare until recently!”
Others claimed that it took them nearly a month of searching to find a stringfish, with PriaiaQuiggle saying it took them “a few weeks” before they successfully got one on their line. Still others claim to have “only seen two” in their years of playing ACNH: “I was excited the second time because it [had] been so long that I thought it was the first time,” said Low-Distribution-511.
And yet some claim to have caught multiple — some on their own islands, and some only when visiting Mystery Islands. It’s hard to say just why there’s so much variation in stringfish spawn rates, but a few other players did provide some insight.
Why Stringfish Are So Hard To Find In New Horizons
Rarity & Rumors
The stringfish is one of three species tied for the title of Most Valuable Freshwater Fish in ACNH, being valued at 15,000 bells along with the dorado and the golden trout. That’s at least in part due to their narrow catch window: stringfish are only available during winter, and only then from 4 PM to 9 PM.
Other than that, they’re an exceptionally rare spawn. We don’t have exact figures for their spawn rates, but the comments suggesting it took some players weeks to find one suggest as much, beginners luck notwithstanding.
Some players offer excellent advice, and, although we can’t verify any of it is accurate, if you’ve tried everything to catch a particular species of fish to no avail, these methods might be worth trying.
One user, takemetothebeach_pls, suggests that creature spawn rates may be more plentiful on the first day they’re available. For stringfish, that’d mean you’re most likely to catch them on December 1 in the Northern Hemisphere, or June 1 in the Southern, the first day of winter in ACNH.
Another, Skiesofamethyst, suggests your fishing spot could be the problem, suggesting that stringfish might spawn a little more readily next to waterfalls.
But you might log in on the first day of winter and cast your line out near a waterfall, only to come up with nothing. For some, stringfish remain almost totally unattainable in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, maybe destined to remain an urban legend forever.
