SOfit & GRIT 920: Building Strength, Confidence, and Community

SOfit, Special Olympics’ evidence-based fitness program, is designed to promote a unified approach to health by engaging people with and without intellectual disabilities (ID) in fitness and wellness activities. In Wisconsin, Special Olympics Wisconsin (SOWI) delivers SOfit in schools, employment centers, and community gyms are creating opportunities for athletes to build lifelong healthy habits.

One of the most impactful partnerships is with GRIT 920, a nonprofit gym in Green Bay dedicated to serving individuals with disabilities. Together, SOWI and GRIT 920 are helping athletes achieve measurable gains in both physical health and overall well-being.

For SOWI athlete Josh, the program has been transformative.

“I can’t even tell you how good I feel after three months of working out,” Josh shared. “It changed my life completely. I’ve been getting in shape, strengthening my mind, and working out with friends. I’m grateful and it’s made my life easier.”

GRIT 920 provides an inclusive fitness environment, featuring specialized equipment and adaptive-certified trainers who tailor each workout to meet individual needs.

“We connect with each person, learn what motivates them, and bring out their best,” said GRIT 920 Executive Director Hollie Linder.

Athletes participating in SOfit at GRIT 920 are building flexibility, strength, balance, and endurance. Skills that enhance both athletic performance and daily living.

“Programs like SOfit and gyms like GRIT 920 are game changers,” said Jeston Glish, SOWI Health Program Manager. “They empower athletes to reach new goals, feel stronger, and thrive in every aspect of their lives.”

Through partnerships like this, SOWI continues to advance its mission of creating healthier, more inclusive communities where every individual can succeed both on and off the playing field.
