HEAR Wisconsin’s Mobile Audiology Clinic Brings Big Wins for Athletes

At each of Special Olympics Wisconsin’s four State Games throughout the year, HEAR Wisconsin’s Mobile Audiology Clinic (MAC) rolls in to provide athletes with free hearing screenings, hearing aid checks and cleanings, and ear wax removal when possible. These services help ensure athletes are able to perform at their best—both on and off the playing field.

At the recent Fall Games, HEAR Wisconsin audiologist Meredith Klinker, Au.D., CCC-A, shared a story that highlights the real impact of the clinic’s work.

“Last year, one athlete came through the MAC for a hearing screening and was found to have significant earwax blockage in both ears, Meredith explained. “He and his mom were encouraged to follow up with his doctor for removal and to return for a re-screening. His primary care doctor referred them to an ENT specialist, who confirmed the blockage and prescribed drops to soften the wax before safely removing it.”

The results were life-changing. Both the athlete and his mom noticed that his hearing improved, and this year, when he returned to the MAC at Fall Games, he passed his screening with flying colors.

This success story underscores how critical services like HEAR Wisconsin’s Mobile Audiology Clinic are to the health and quality of life of Special Olympics athletes. By offering on-site access to hearing care, MAC is helping athletes overcome barriers and continue to shine in competition and beyond.
