Resident Alien Season 4 Just Used The Same Harry Storyline For The Third Time Since The Show Began

Warning: Spoilers ahead for Resident Alien season 4, episode 3, “Ties That Bind.”Resident Alien season 4, episode 3, “Ties That Bind,” ends with a twist that initially seems fresh, but it’s actually the third time the show has used the same story for Alan Tudyk’s Harry Vanderspeigle. As well as the surprise death of the Mantid (Clancy Brown), “Ties That Bind” brings back Heather (Edi Patterson), with an added left turn of her now being a mother to her and Harry’s new children. I love that Patterson has returned to the Resident Alien cast, but a big part of her comeback is surprisingly stale at this point.
Part of what makes Resident Alien so great is how difficult it is to guess what’s going to happen next. The show is full of twists and turns, and I remain convinced there isn’t another show like it on TV right now. That said, I have started to notice an interesting pattern when it comes to how certain characters can be connected to Alan Tudyk’s character. I’m relatively certain it’s intentional, but it could just be a strange coincidence.
All Of Harry’s Children In Resident Alien Were Fathered By Alternate Versions Of Himself (Including The Ones He Had With Heather)
Liza & Bridget aren’t really Harry’s kids either
The twist that Heather was pregnant with Harry’s children when she left in Resident Alien season 3 is very exciting, and more interesting because Harry no longer shares any DNA with his newly-revealed hybrid offspring. One of the biggest reveals in Resident Alien season 4 is that Harry was robbed of all his alien energy, and he’s pretty much just a regular human now. So, it places a notable degree of separation between his being the biological father of the babies who debut at the end of “Ties That Bind.”
Of course, Harry was already a father before Heather came back, but he also wasn’t.
Of course, Harry was already a father before Heather came back, but he also wasn’t. Bridget is technically Harry’s offspring, but he is the descendant of a version of Harry from an alternate future, who called himself Goliath. Like Harry’s new kids, Bridget is also a hybrid, as his mother is a human called Violinda Darvell (Maxim Roy). Going back even further, Harry has also received a visit from the daughter of the man he killed to take his form.
There is also a running joke that Harry sees himself as the father of Robert Hutchins (Paul Piaskowski), Peter Bach’s son.
Liza Vanderspeigle (Taylor Blackwell) isn’t really the new Harry’s daughter, and she still doesn’t know her real dad died at the hands of an impostor. So, for all of Harry’s experiences with fatherhood, he still lacks any biological children who are truly his. Resident Alien will presumably correct this anomaly when Harry inevitably reclaims his alien energy from the Greys. If and when this happens, the kids he’s now revealed to have had with Bridget will actually be his genetic descendants.
Why Resident Alien Keeps Toying With The Lineage Of Harry’s Kids
Resident Alien is keeping Harry just lonely enough
Harry seems to be getting closer and closer to becoming a father, but it continues to fall apart on a technicality. This recurring plot point may not an accident, though. One of the longest-running storylines in Resident Alien is that Harry feels isolated because he’s the only member of his species who also feels emotions, making him a pretty unique figure in the universe. Bridget comes close, but he’s half human and also requires being cared for rather than being someone with whom Harry can properly connect.

Resident Alien season 4, episode 2, “The Lonely Man,” is filled with nods to a formative Marvel show, possibly foreshadowing a permanent exit.
By coming so close to giving Harry a child that he can fully raise as himself and who is a full-blooded member of his species, the show manages to highlight the sorrow that runs quietly through Harry. While he has a handful of close human friends on Earth, they struggle to relate to him in certain ways, and he also fails to grasp certain nuances of human relationships. Bringing Harry so close to “traditional” fatherhood a third time could be the end of this Resident Alien trend, or it could just be the latest in a long line of examples.
