United Way of Dane County: Wisconsin’s Homelessness Awareness Month 2024 kickoff

Wausau, WI – The statewide kickoff event for Homelessness Awareness Month will be held at the Community Partners Campus (CPC), 360 Grand Avenue, Wausau, WI on Nov. 1 at noon. This event is open to the public and everyone is invited to attend. Speakers will include state representatives addressing the concerns of homelessness in Wisconsin and individuals speaking about their lived experience of homelessness. This event is an opportunity to build much needed awareness of the homeless crisis in our state and local communities.

There will also be a display at the event regarding homelessness in our area. In addition, at about 1 p.m. a tour of the CPC will be offered to those who are interested.  CPC is a single location that houses seven nonprofit organizations, all with a focus on basic needs: food, shelter, healthcare, and social wellbeing in Wausau.

One of the speakers at the Nov. 1 statewide event will be state Rep. Patrick Snyder (Assembly District 85). According to Rep. Snyder, “Collaboration and coordination among government agencies, nonprofit organizations, and community groups are crucial to ensure efficient delivery of services and resources to homeless individuals. Establishing interagency partnerships can help streamline processes and maximize the impact of available resources.”

Other speakers will include Wausau Mayor Doug Diny and Michael Basford, director of the Wisconsin Interagency Council on Homelessness.  According to Basford,  “As the homelessness crisis in Wisconsin continues to grow, we are seeing it manifesting in communities throughout the state in ways never seen before. Ending homelessness as we know it in Wisconsin will require an expanded effort across all sectors in the state and a substantial investment in proven solutions to prevent and end homelessness.”

The Nov. 1 statewide kickoff event will also feature a Ribbon Tree designed to showcase and measure the different types of homelessness experienced in Wisconsin.  Artwork depicting how the artists see or have personally experienced homelessness will be on display and available for purchase.  After this event, the display will be transferred to the State Capitol rotunda for public viewing until Nov. 30.

Through this event we hope we can come together to find better solutions to address this growing issue of homelessness in our state and communities.
