(MADISON) Special Olympics Wisconsin (SOWI) has been awarded a $191,290 grant from the Wisconsin Department of Health Services to support its Inclusive Health initiative, which aims to improve healthcare access for individuals with intellectual disabilities (ID).
The Inclusive Health program focuses on eliminating the barriers—attitudinal, communication, physical, and policy-related—that have long prevented people with ID from receiving equal healthcare. By addressing these challenges through training, policy reform, and enhanced accessibility, the initiative works to ensure that individuals with ID are not left behind in accessing the healthcare services they need.
The funding has also enabled SOWI to hire two new health staff members, whose contributions have been crucial to the program’s success. With their support, Inclusive Health has conducted 68 training sessions, reaching over 1,300 healthcare professionals and students.
“These trainings are designed to increase awareness and equip healthcare providers with the skills needed to offer effective, compassionate care to individuals with ID,” said Brittany Hoegh, Senior Director of Health Programs. “By fostering a better understanding of the unique needs of patients with ID, these trainings help create a more inclusive and responsive healthcare environment.”
In addition to the new staff members, 30 new Athlete Health Messengers were trained from across the state. These athletes serve as advocates for their own health and wellness, while encouraging others with intellectual disabilities (ID) to do the same and seek out necessary healthcare services. By empowering athletes as Health Messengers, the Inclusive Health initiative ensures that the message of accessible, inclusive healthcare reaches athletes and local programs throughout the state.
With the support of funding, our dedicated staff, and the newly trained healthcare professionals, Inclusive Health is making significant strides. More individuals with ID are now able to access the care they need, while healthcare providers are better prepared to deliver it. The initiative is fostering a more inclusive healthcare system, where people with ID have equal access to health programs and services, leading to improved health outcomes for all.
SOWI’s Inclusive Health program continues to envision a future where everyone, regardless of their abilities, can live a healthy and fulfilling life.
