Pocan predicts “remarkable results” for Dems in November
CHICAGO – Madison-area U.S. Rep. Mark Pocan sees new Dem enthusiasm translating into “remarkable results coming out of Wisconsin come November.”
“There’s such enthusiasm, especially in contrast, I think where we were maybe five or six weeks ago,” Pocan, D-Town of Vermont, said on a WisPolitics-WisconsinEye video from the DNC. “You can feel it, and that’s going to help, not just to make sure that Wisconsin stays in the blue column, but helps Tammy Baldwin, helps win congressional seats, helps on the new fair maps that we have for the Legislature. And I think you’re going to have some remarkable results coming out of Wisconsin come November.”
An ardent progressive, Pocan sees Kamala Harris “much like Joe Biden” on the Democratic Party’s spectrum.
“You’d say a mainstream Democrat who also understands a lot of progressive populist policy and supports that. One of the things I think, with Joe Biden, you look at how he governed, he governed as a progressive. But honestly, that’s where people are on the ground, and maybe that’s where we always should be if we want to win elections.”
He said he didn’t regret backing state Rep. Katrina Shankland, D-Stevens Point, in a contentious 3rd CD Dem primary. Rebecca Cooke of Eau Claire emerged to be the Dem nominee vs. freshman GOP U.S. Rep. Derrick Van Orden of Prairie du Chien.
“Katrina Shankland was an amazingly effective state legislator, and I loved her background, and I think she would have been a great candidate against van Orden, but honestly, Rebecca Cooke is a good candidate as well because of the issues. Van Orden is awful, awful on so many issues. He’s one of the most embarrassing members of Congress, and I serve with Marjorie Taylor Greene, so that’s saying an awful lot.”
He also is eyeing the 1st and 8th CDs in the hope of regaining the House majority and says the high enthusiasm will help in those districts too.
